What If It Rains The Day Of Our Family Photo Session?

Google says, “On average it rains about 150 days a year in Seattle, but the amount of rain isn't much.”

In other words, if you are booking a Seattle family photo session outdoors there is nearly a 50% chance there will be predictions of rain (and even higher if you book during spring or fall - the most popular time of year for family photo shoots!).

Want to know how I handle weather concerns and my weather policies as a Pacific Northwest photographer?

Schedule your family photo session for optimal weather.

The rainiest seasons in Seattle are also some of the most popular months for family photo sessions. Families love to capture spring flowers and fall foliage, and I don’t blame them! However, during these popular times, it can be difficult (although not impossible) to reschedule and find new available session dates.

For this reason, if your family does not have a lot of flexibility in their schedule (only available on weekends) it may be wise to schedule during summer. On the other hand, if your family can meet after work/school on a week-day, then a reschedule due to weather is much more easily accommodated.

Don’t check your weather app in advance

Although it can be tempting, I ask that you do not worry about or even check the weather forecast in the days leading up to your session.

Most weather apps will only show the percent chance of rain over a 24 hour period. An hour-by-hour account is not usually provided until the current day. So while you may see 50% chance of rain in the forecast for your session in three days, it could mean rain in the early morning hours or around noon, yet a clear, dry evening when your outdoor photo session is scheduled.

Let’s Play a Game… The Waiting Game

Rest assured, while I may tell YOU not to check the weather, I as a PNW photographer am always checking! I have at least three weather apps on my phone and am constantly hitting refresh. I will absolutely be aware of the forecast, and that means you can rest easy.

My biggest ask? Please wait. I will contact you the day of your session if the forecast looks sketchy. I prefer to wait until noon or, even better, 2-3 hours before your scheduled start time (what time will our family photo session be scheduled?) to discuss a reschedule since weather can change on a dime.

The calm after the storm

When I first moved here from the midwest, the low hanging clouds and rainy weather was a huge adjustment. But as my photography career took off, I started to notice the advantages of the Pacific Northwest climate. Low hanging clouds create a giant soft box effect, evenly lighting subjects with feathered, flattering light. A cloudy sky is not to be feared!

I can also tell you after nearly a decade in this business, the rainiest mornings and even afternoons can lead to the most beautiful evening light. More times than I’d like to admit, I have canceled a session several hours before it was scheduled, and then kicked myself when all fell calm and we missed a magnificent sunset.

Lastly, I understand neither your hair nor my equipment is waterproof!

Rest easy, if it is raining when your session is upon us, we will absolutely reschedule! I get families don't want wet, frizzy hair or muddy clothes, and I do not want wet equipment! :) We promise, if weather looks sketchy, we will be in touch the day of your session and figure out options for rescheduling if necessary.
